British series of superhero films to be launched

The British Film Institute (BFI) is to develop a series of British superhero films, in an initiative spearheaded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Inspired by the global success of ‘Harry Potter’ and wanting to exploit the global rise of Anti-Americanism in the age of Trump, both the DCMS and BFI believe there is a market for a British variant of American superheroes.

A British version of “Superman” is to be launched, with the first film likely to appear in cinemas before the end of 2027. The series of films, to be called “Fairly Good Chap”, will see a British superhero attempting to tackle a series of miscreants by politely reasoning with them, offering to chat over a cup of tea and occasionally crossing his arms in a passive-aggressive manner.

‘James Bond’ star Hugh Dennis has signed a contract for the role.

A British version of ‘Batman’ is also in the works, with the British version to be called ‘Baglady’, starring Olivia Coleman as a bag lady on the streets of London who tackles criminals on the side. She will have a sidekick called ‘Rodent’, a street rat, to be played by Ben Whishaw.

A British version of “Spiderman” is next on the list, with “Daddy Long Legs Man” to be developed as a BBC Special Production to be broadcast on Christmas Day. The 6ft 7inch Stephen Merchant has been confirmed in the lead role.
