Scottish independence campaigner claims UK a 'voluntary union' not a country
A campaigner for Scottish independence has publicly claimed that Scotland is a separate country to the rest of Britain and is in a 'voluntary union' with a separate entity called 'England'.
A campaigner for Scottish independence has publicly claimed that Scotland is a separate country to the rest of Great Britain and is in a 'voluntary union' with a separate entity called 'England'.
Juan Kerr, who was born 'John' but changed his name to reflect his self-declared European identity, made the following statement:
"Actually, the UK is different from France, Germany, Italy, the USA, Sweden, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Mongolia, Bolivia and every other country I can think of. It is technically a union of different countries, and these different countries are in a voluntary union with each other".
Professor of Politics, Annabel Whelan, thought the comments were amusing but harmless:
"Some voters think Elvis is still alive. Some think the Jews caused 9/11. Some vote Liberal Democrat. The electorate is a strange collection of unique individuals, some of whom are very eccentric indeed. It is all part of the rich tapestry of human existence"
Juan Kerr is undeterred however and in a phone-in on his local radio station told listeners the reception he had received:
"I even had the Rangers fans chanting my name. Can you imagine it? 30,000 fans shouting 'Juan Kerr, Juan Kerr'. It was one of the proudest moments of my life".
Following the interview, Juan announced plans to launch a new educational campaign explaining Scotland's constitutional position to the public. Attendance has so far been limited to his mother and three people who believe Atlantis should be granted observer status at the United Nations.
