Trump offers Epstein Island to Denmark in return for Greenland

In his latest diplomatic wheeze, President Trump has made an offer of exchange to the Danish Government, offering full political and economic control of ‘Little St James’, the infamous Epstein-island in return for US control of Greenland.
Little St James is part of the US Virgin Islands, which the United States acquired in 1917 after purchasing the islands from none other than Denmark. As part of the deal, the United States agreed not to pursue control of Greenland.
Over a hundred years later, this interesting historical coincidence provides a potential solution to Trump’s diplomatic dilemma. With continuing resistance from allied countries, and uncertainty over support in Congress for the President’s territorial ambitions, a negotiated deal which averts the use of force appeals to the White House.
Likewise, with Danish control over Greenland uncertain, a face-saving deal whereby Denmark gains an island in return for giving one up offers some political attractions. One diplomatic observer wondered ‘why not swap a freezing piece of ice you’d never consider visiting for a sun-kissed tropical island? It’s a no-brainer’.
In a phone call with the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, Trump told her “The island is perfect. Totally secluded. You can get away with a lot of things there. A lot. People are saying that. I don’t know, but they’re saying it.”
